Safety In Our Homes Print this page
Use these safety tips to help prevent serious injuries in your homes!
- Make sure hot food is always in the center of the table.
- Bath and shower water should be no higher than 100 degrees.
- Allow food cooked in a microwave to cool prior to eating
- Blow out lit candles before leaving a room.
- Shut off portable space heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Keep flammable items at least 3 feet from anything hot.
- Stay with food when cooking.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month.
- Install smoke alarms on every level in the house as well as bedrooms.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
- Practice home fire escape plans.
- Check electrical cords for damage. Replace if necessary.
- When using heating pads only use for 15-20 minutes at a time and do not lie, sit, or place anything on the pad.
- Treat a burn right away. Put it in cool water for 3-5 minutes. Cover with a dry cloth.
- If the burn is bigger than your fist or if you have any questions get medical help right away.
- If possible remove all clothing, diapers, jewelry, and metal from burned areas. Get medical advice before attempting.
- Never smoke if you are tired, have taken medicine, drugs or alcohol that makes you sleep.
- Always use deep sturdy ashtrays.
- In the event of a smoke alarm activation Get Out and Stay Out!
